INCREASED EFFICIENCY FOR A WIDE RANGE OF SYSTEMS

Original Population Hereford breeders pride themselves on producing a high-yielding, compact beef animal with natural thickness and an unmatched ability to convert grass to quality meat.

Their conversion rate can be attributed to the skilled breeding of these cattle, having been selectively chosen for their docility, conformation and foraging ability since the 17th century.

These characteristics make them ideal for use within both suckler beef and dairy operations, with producers able to reduce inputs and create a highly desirable end product, whether selling as youngstock or finished beef.

THE CLUB

The Traditional Hereford Breeders Club was formed in 1996 by Hereford cattle breeders within the UK who wished to maintain the native or Original Population of Herefords, which were bred from cattle that were born and reared in Great Britain and Ireland, and whose ancestry is traceable to the 1878 Herd Book.

The Club welcomes all new members who are either breeding Original Population Hereford cattle, using those genetics in non-Original Population herds or have an interest in the promotion and growth of the breed and would like to get involved!

THBC 2026 census highlights at-risk cow family lines

Summary of the 2026 data A 2026 census conducted by the Traditional Hereford Breeders' Club (THBC) has recorded a 6% decline to 1,230 pedigree registered Traditional Hereford breeding females, though tracking slightly better than the national cattle herd decline of 9% in the same period. Herd Competition awarded to Nash herd

The judges for this year's competition were Willem van Beele and Susie Woods, owners of the well-known Herouldmede herd, based in north Herefordshire. Their travels took them to visit thirteen entries reaching from the West of Wales, over to Norfolk in the East, and up the country to Yorkshire, all within June and July.
